You can drive from Tallinn to Rohuküla, an approximate travel time of 1 hour and 40 minutes. Alternatively, a bus service is available for this route. From Rohuküla, a 90-minute (28 km) ferry crossing will take you to Heltermaa, conveniently located just 25 kilometers from Kärdla. Once in Heltermaa, it’s a short 20-minute drive to reach Kärdla and explore the island’s developed industrial areas. For those seeking a faster route, consider taking a flight from Tallinn to Kärdla Airport. Flights are available twice daily on weekdays, with one flight per day on weekends. Additionally, there is a complimentary airport bus service that takes passengers to and from the airport, connecting Kärdla and ensuring a seamless journey. The bus from Kärdla to the airport departs from the Kärdla bus station 50 minutes before the departure of the flight. The bus runs on the route Kärdla bus station-Keskväljak-Padu-Linnumäe-Airport. Hiiumaa hosts a diverse range of companies, with the majority engaged in professional, scientific, and technical activities, wholesale and retail trade, and the construction sector. Additionally, in 2020, the island saw a notable presence of businesses in the agricultural field, encompassing crop and livestock farming, forestry, logging, as well as fishing and aquaculture, totaling 77 companies. Notably, the manufacturing sector houses the island’s largest companies in terms of employee count.

For years, plastic production has been the leading industry in Hiiumaa, ranking highest in terms of turnover, added value, exports, and the number of employees. The sector’s major players primarily specialize in manufacturing plastic products through methods like injection molding, producing plastic packaging and films from recycled or biodegradable materials, and assembling various plastic goods. Key export markets include the Nordic countries.

As of the end of 2021, Hiiumaa boasts 2,785 organic crop groups covering a total area of 14,387.5 hectares, according to the Register of Organic Farming. Approximately three-quarters of Hiiumaa’s organic land area consists of permanent grassland. By the close of 2021, Hiiumaa also housed 360 organic animal groups, with organic cattle accounting for over three-quarters of this total. Sheep make up 12% of the organic animal groups in Hiiumaa.

Agriculture has emerged as one of the most capital-intensive sectors, characterized by high production equipment costs and substantial entry expenses for new ventures. The primary contributors to the sector’s economic performance are dairy cattle farming and the production of sea buckthorn planting materials.
